Successful applicants can sell their products in Singapore, giving them a first-mover advantage in Asia. Startups at the Frontier

Shiok Meats is developing cultivated crustacean products, including shrimp and crab, using stem cell technology. TurtleTree Labs focuses on cell-based milk and bioactive proteins produced through precision fermentation. Next Gen Foods, known for its TiNDLE plant-based chicken, has expanded rapidly across restaurants and retail channels in Singapore and abroad. These companies exemplify a broader ecosystem that includes biotech firms, food manufacturers, and investors. Each startup targets a different segment of the protein market, but all share the goal of reducing Singapore’s reliance on imported animal products.

Scaling Beyond the Lab

The path from laboratory prototype to supermarket shelf remains difficult. Production costs for cultivated meat are still higher than conventional meat, and bioreactor capacity is limited. Consumer acceptance also varies, particularly for cell-based seafood and dairy. However, Singapore’s ecosystem is addressing these barriers through shared R&D facilities, co-investment schemes, and public-private partnerships. As of 2026, more novel food approvals are expected, and several startups are moving into pilot-scale manufacturing.
